Our Story

Professor Mark Birch-Machin’s group has pioneered research into the mitochondria’s role in skin ageing since 1995. During this time, Mark has had a keen interest in the role lifestyle stress plays in mitochondrial dysfunction in the skin and his research group is specifically focused on the role sunlight, pollution, sleep, and genetic mitochondrial dysfunction have on the skin. For the last 15 years, Mark has been developing the technology behind the Skin Life Analytics test and its application in improving skin health. He is regularly asked to speak at international conferences and is recognised as a world leader in the field of molecular dermatology and his research has featured in the global media over the last 20 years.

Skin Life Analytics spun out of Newcastle University in 2022 and the company has its offices at the Catalyst Building in the Helix development, and a laboratory that benefits from the latest equipment housed in the Medical School at Newcastle University.
